Dania Beach Blvd. and Ocean Drive (A1A) Roadway Improvement Project
THe Florida Department of Transportation will begin a road improvement project in our area this fall. The Ocean Drive project (A1A) starts just north of Sheridan and goes to Cambridge. It starts during the first week in September 2007 and is scheduled to last through early 2009. The DOT has offered an incentive bonus for the contractor to complete the work before the holidays of 2008. The scope of the work will include extensive drainage work, reconstruction of the roadway between Perry St and Walnut and resurfacing throughout the entire project limits. They will also install decorative lighting throughout the project.
The Dania Beach Boulevard project starts at US1 and goes to Cambridge (where the first project ends). It is scheduled to start on October 1, 2007 and last through the summer of 2008. The scope of work for this job is median work, resurfacing, some signalization and landscaping.
Crime Watch Program
The Hollywood North Beach Association has recently received many notices of increased crime incidents in our neighborhood and we would really like to get our Crime Watch Program going strong again. We all know that budgetary cuts are straining our Police Department and crime on any street in our neighborhood or in the parks affects all of our safety and well being.
We are reaching out to everyone in the neighborhood to become involved.....we need street captains and we need many members. Please realize this doesn't require a major commitment on anyone's part.....all we need to do is get a network together (which we can all communicate via e-mail), post some signs around, communicate with our designated Police Officers and all keep our eyes and ears open and report suspicious behavior or incidents. I believe there are meetings once a month but if all the members rotate, this will only require one meeting once a year, max. We ALL need to step up to the plate and look out for each other and keep our little piece of paradise safe.
Please help us spread the word about Crime Watch (many of our neighbors are not on our e-mail list or don't even read e-mail) and please join us. There is a small booklet which I will try to get in a PDF file for all to read. But please, if anyone out there is interested please contact me, Cheryl Mitchell, at mitchx3@aol.com.
Update as of September 29, 2008:
We currently have captains who have volunteered for Balboa Street, Oak Street and Walnut Street. We still need many, many members from all streets and captains from Desoto, Palm Street, and Franklin Street. Also, we would love a captain for the park area as well as the Moorings and Hollywood Beach Condos.
Beach Beautification Project
The Hollywood North Beach Association is working on implementing a beautification program. The program will be introduced at the October 22 meeting. More information coming soon!
Recycled Glass For Beach Renourishment
At our May meeting, Steve Higgins, Beach Erosion Administrator and Phil Bresee, Recycling Program Manager for Broward County, Florida educated Hollywood North Beach Association on the County's Recycled Glass for Beach Renourishment. The PowerPoint presentation was entitled "From Sand to Glass and Back to Sand." The County would like to conduct a three year experiment by dumping 200 loads of recycled glass to sand in North Beach (Custer Street) and study to see where it goes and how fast.
Commit 2B Fit
The Broward County Parks and Recreation Division launched a new fitness program, Commit 2B Fit - It Starts in Parks, to encourage people of all ages to get active.
This campaign is designed to create public awareness that physical activity, which is available through parks and recreation facilities and programs, leads to a healthier lifestyle and overall improved wellness. Participants receive a Commit 2B Fit Rewards Card at any Broward County park to keep track of their activities on a monthly basis.
Airport Expansion
The proposed Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale Airport Expansion project impacts local residents in the areas of air quality, storm water management, water and energy conservation, landscaping, economic disparity, hazardous materials, police and fire services, wetlands and excavations, archaeological and historical resources, traffic improvements, and noise. Of these areas, the issues of noise and air quality may create the most impact upon Hollywood residents. Click on the link below to stay informed!
